He woke up lying on the sofa in the break room with a headache so intense he groaned and closed his eyes again.

"So you must be the bottom."

Ethan's eyes shot open.

Mark stood by the door that would take them out to the gym. His beefy arms were crossed over his massive chest. He smirked at Ethan's expression.

"You lie there and let him do all the work, don't you?"

Ethan checked his pants. They were done up, the belt buckled. A swift check of his holster revealed that Mark had replaced his gun, too.

"What the hell is your problem?" Ethan asked him after clearing his throat.

"I told you. I wanted to send a message. Tell your boyfriend that if he touches me or Lonny again I'll do more to you than what I did today."

Ethan was on his feet and storming up to Mark before he was consciously aware of choosing to do so. He raised his hands, intending to beat the other man or strangle him—anything. Mark dropped his arms and widened his stance, fear brightening his eyes.

"—taking his time."

Lonny's voice came from just outside the staff door, followed by the indistinguishable murmur of Max's assent.

Paling, Ethan dropped his hands and stepped back from Mark. The door opened, hitting Mark lightly on the shoulder.

"Oh, hey, there you are." Lonny stuck his head in the gap between the door and doorframe. He looked from Mark to Ethan and frowned slightly. "Everything okay?"

"Everything's fine," Ethan said before Mark could speak.

Mark stared at him for a long moment before he nodded. The curled edge of his lips again made Ethan want to punch him, so he quickly turned away and pretended to look over the room for anything they might have dropped.

"Well, come on, then." But Lonny still sounded doubtful.

Mark opened the door fully. "I was just teaching Ethan how we do things around here. Where everything is, I mean."

Ethan didn't trust himself to correct him. He rubbed anxiously at his neck, wanting to laugh that he was glad Mark had choked him out using his arm rather than his hands. There weren't any marks on his neck to alert Max that anything had happened. Max had no reason to go ballistic and lose his highly prized control over himself.

Ethan followed Mark out of the room, breathing a private sigh of relief at seeing Max again even if the other man's expression was aloof. He was probably still uptight about their argument in the gym. Ethan hoped his own expression revealed nothing. His heart hammered and he wanted to blurt out what had happened, but it wouldn't do him or Max any good. If anything, it would prove Max right: if someone were observant enough, they would see the truth about their relationship, just as Mark had.

He had no one to blame but himself for allowing the situation to reach the point it had. But he would learn from it, and Max would be proud. Max was right. Professionalism was how they would get through this assignment unscathed.
